We ripped our entire downstairs apart for this kitchen, and it was worth every bit of chaos
Before there was a cosy corner to speak of, there was a downstairs that barely resembled a home. We properly gutted it. Walls came down, everything was stripped back, and for a while it genuinely looked like the whole project had been a mistake. Renovating while living around it is hard graft, no way to dress that up. But watching this space slowly come together, right through to the little corner I'm sharing today, made every bit of the mess worth it.
There's a certain kind of morning magic in a kitchen corner that's just yours, the kettle warming up, light coming through the window, everything within reach and nothing rushed. For me, it's become the spot I actually look forward to each morning, even on the busiest shift days. Here's how I've slowly pulled mine (see pic) together, and a few pieces that made the biggest difference.
The little details that make it feel intentional
It's not about buying everything at once. It's a few considered pieces that work together. A soft linen tea towel draped just so, a canister that actually looks nice sitting out instead of hidden in a cupboard, herbs on the windowsill you can pinch straight into whatever you're cooking.
Linen tea towels
These have quietly become one of my favourite small buys. Soft, good weight, and they just make the counter feel less "utilitarian" and more like somewhere I actually want to be. Feels like a small luxury item that doesnt break the bank and people always compliment them.
Wooden Round Chopping/Serving Board
There's something about a good wooden board that just makes a kitchen feel finished. Ours gets used constantly, whether it's actually chopping something or just leaning there looking nice between meals.
Wooden tray/riser
This is the one that finally made the corner feel styled rather than just cluttered. Something as simple as raising a candle or a small plant a few inches off the counter makes the whole thing look properly put together, not just placed.
Windowsill herb planter
These little galvanized pots have quietly become one of my favourites in the whole corner. There's just something about the raw metal against the wood that feels right, and having fresh herbs a hand's reach from the hob makes even a rushed dinner feel a bit more considered.
Stoneware mugs
These are the ones that finally added a splash of colour into the kitchen without tipping it over into busy or clashing. Each mug's a slightly different shade, and it's such a small thing, but it makes the corner feel a bit less matched-matched and more like it's actually collected over time. They come in loads of other colourways too, so it's easy to pick a set that suits your own space rather than just copying ours
De'Longhi Stilosa Espresso Machine
This is the one that's actually stuck around, which says a lot given how many gadgets end up shoved in a cupboard after a month. Nothing fussy about it, just a proper cup of coffee without needing to know what I'm doing. Honestly wasn't sure it'd be worth it at first, but it's become part of the morning routine now, not just a nice-to-have on the counter.
